About the Author

Screenwriter, Playwright, Lyricist, Artist, Author

I blame Dan Dare (The Eagle comic circa 1964). Him and Spiderman and my dad. They fired my imagination and encouraged me to make stuff up and scribble it down when I was still a kid learning joined-up writing. Years later, as luck would have it, the universe conspired to invent punk rock just as I formed a band, so although I couldn’t sing or play any instruments, I was finally able to make use of the crazy doodlings that filled the notebooks, that filled the folders, gathering dust beneath my bed. Wild times. By then I'd discovered Kafka, Tristan Tzara and Stanislavski, and if that sounds like an odd combo, who would have thought that playing tunes on crockery with cutlery and power tools, dressed in a lab-coat, would lead me to the Royal College of Art. Professor Dick Ross that’s who. If not for him, I’d still be singing about left-handed polar bears. (No, really) Instead I bagged a MA Distinction in Film, produced a BAFTA winner, and headed off to Hollywood as a screenwriter.

In all honesty, I can't say there's been any great masterplan career wise, I've just followed my instincts, tried to hang on to my integrity, had some fun and learned to keep on learning. And some of the fine folks I've had the good fortune to learn from along the way have been true masters of their art and craft: Roland Penrose (godfather of British Surrealism), Fred Zinnemann and JG Ballard, to name but three legends. So I've been very lucky. But as the old adage says: The harder I've worked, the luckier I've got.

These days the crazy doodlings that fill the notebooks that fill the folders that gather digital dust on my computer are taking shape as novels. On 17th July 2014, publishing giants Simon & Schuster will unleash the first of them, a fantasy adventure entitled: The Savage Kingdom. I blame Dan Dare.

Oh, for the record, I also make mixed-media artworks and exhibit them from time to time, and I'm a member of the following institutions: Writers Guild of America West; British Academy of Songwriters & Composers; Musical Theatre Network; Leonardo, The International Society for Arts, Science & Technology; The National Association of Writers in Education
